Great Content Is More Than Storytelling
Content Creation is ultimately about storytelling. If we break it down, it can be said that we take a baseline story line the "fact" or core subject and shape it to evoke "flavor" (emotional resonance), decorating it with "ornamentation" (rhetoric/style) to bring it to life. To do this effectively, you need to understand what these three elements Fact, Flavor, and Ornamentation actually mean. Without grasping them, creating content is meaningless.
The Fact is simply the existing subject, product, or service. On its own, it is often too simple and linear, which is why people generally find it uninteresting.
Therefore, when presenting this fact, you need to stimulate your audience's emotions to capture their interest. Just as a love story with only a simple romance between a main character and heroine is less engaging than a captivating love triangle, adding a conflict or a power struggle to an otherwise linear story instantly elevates people's emotional engagement far beyond the ordinary.
This ability to stimulate human emotion and deliver a distinct feeling is what we call Flavor (emotional resonance).
The reason this works is because human nature inherently carries a mix of primal instincts and rational thought. We are naturally drawn to things centered around conflict. Because of this, creators need to leverage this "conflict" to actively drive emotional involvement and participation from their audience.
Ornamentation is the art of bringing vivid imagery and powerful dynamics into the "mind's eye" of the reader or viewer, rather than just presenting plain text. It acts as a bridge that helps manifest the "Flavor" mentioned above.
For instance, when reading a story, effective ornamentation prevents the audience from just seeing static words on a screen, instead, it enables them to mentally visualize the characters, their actions, and their clashes.
Nowadays, people prefer not to put in too much mental effort. Consequently, content creators no longer try to directly appeal to raw intellect, focusing instead purely on emotions. Moreover, many people drift along, often unaware that they are completely immersed in the "flavors" curated and fed to them by platform algorithms.
A truly great content creator goes beyond simply provoking temporary emotional thrills, they guide the audience to a level of genuine curiosity where they look at the content and think, "Is this really true? Why did this happen?"
Whenever I talk to my team and juniors about content, I always tell them to ask themselves, Why do I want to create this? What is the value I am trying to provide? If you cannot answer those questions, stop and do not proceed. Most importantly, I always remind them, never let the content you create become a poison to the community.
Understand these points and apply them in practice. In time, instead of just being an ordinary content creator lost in a Red Ocean, you will evolve into a quality, trusted Impact Leader within the community.
